Delhi Airport to Bir Billing: Travel Routes and Treks to Plan
Explore Bir Billing with practical, locally aware planning.

If you are landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, treat Bir Billing as the start of a mountain trip rather than a direct airport transfer. Most itineraries involve a road journey or a combination of rail or air connections and a final road leg. The right option depends on your arrival time, budget, luggage and how much flexibility you have.

Option 1: Airport to Bir by road or overnight bus

From the airport, arrange a transfer to the confirmed departure point for an intercity bus, or book a direct vehicle if that suits your budget. Overnight buses towards the Kangra region can be useful, but departure terminals, boarding points and routes vary by operator and date. Check the exact boarding location and leave enough time to get there from the airport. A direct private road transfer offers flexibility but is a long drive; plan breaks and avoid assuming a fixed arrival time.

Option 2: Train plus road transfer

You can compare rail journeys towards the Pathankot area or other suitable railheads, then continue by road to Bir. The total journey includes station transfers, waiting time and the mountain-road leg. Narrow-gauge services in the region have limited routes and schedules, so check current timetables before building your plan around them.

Option 3: Fly closer, then travel by road

Depending on your dates, flights to the Kangra/Gaggal area may be worth comparing with the road journey. Routes and frequency can change, and a flight does not remove the need for a road transfer to Bir. Confirm the operating airport, schedule, baggage rules and onward transport before buying a ticket.

Arriving in Bir: allow a buffer

Bir is the practical base for accommodation, food and local arrangements. Billing, the paragliding take-off area, is higher up the mountain and requires a separate transfer. Avoid booking a trek or weather-dependent flight immediately after a long journey. An overnight stay gives you time to rest, check conditions and confirm the meeting point.

Short walks and local hikes

For a lighter outdoor day, ask locally about suitable village walks, forest paths and waterfall routes near Bir. Access and difficulty vary by route and season; do not assume a trail is open or well marked just because it appears on a map. Choose a walk based on daylight, fitness, footwear and current advice, and avoid river crossings or steep paths after rain.

Rajgundha Valley trek

The Billing-to-Rajgundha route is one of the better-known longer walks associated with a Bir Billing visit. It crosses mountain terrain towards a village in the Chhota Bhangal region and is often planned with an overnight stay. Exact distances, timing, trail conditions and return options vary. Arrange a guide if you are unfamiliar with the route, confirm accommodation and decide in advance whether you will return to Billing or continue towards the Barot side.

Hanuman Garh and higher viewpoints

Some local itineraries include a higher viewpoint or additional climb around the Rajgundha area, sometimes referred to as Hanuman Garh. Treat this as an optional extension rather than an automatic part of the basic village trek. Ask a knowledgeable local guide about the exact route, elevation gain, weather, fitness demands and time needed before deciding.

Barot Valley and the Rajgundha crossing

Barot can be visited by road or included in a multi-day plan that approaches Rajgundha from the Billing side and exits towards Badagran and Barot. The crossing requires coordination between walking and road transport. Confirm the trail, road access, pickup point and accommodation in advance; do not rely on old distance estimates or assume vehicles can reach every section.

Thamsar Pass and Bara Bhangal: expedition-level planning

Routes over Thamsar Pass towards Bara Bhangal are significantly more demanding than a village walk to Rajgundha. They involve high mountain terrain, exposure to changing weather and the need for appropriate experience, time, equipment and local guiding. They should not be treated as casual day hikes from Bir. Seek current expert guidance and make a dedicated expedition plan before considering them.

How to choose a trek

  • For an easy arrival day: choose a short, locally confirmed walk near Bir.
  • For a full outdoor day: ask a local guide about suitable hikes and current trail conditions.
  • For a village and overnight experience: plan the Billing-to-Rajgundha route with a confirmed stay.
  • For a road-and-walk combination: coordinate Rajgundha and Barot transport before departure.
  • For high passes or remote villages: use experienced local professionals and a dedicated multi-day plan.

What to pack and verify

Carry grippy walking shoes, layers, rain protection, water, snacks, personal medication, a charged phone and offline maps. Check weather, daylight, trail access and local advice. Keep your accommodation informed of your route, and turn back if conditions worsen. Mountain weather and access can change quickly.

Suggested trip structure

For a short visit, arrive in Bir and rest on day one, keep day two for paragliding or a locally suitable walk, and use day three for a cultural visit or departure. If Rajgundha or Barot is the main goal, add nights rather than trying to squeeze the trek between transport connections. Longer routes such as Thamsar Pass require their own itinerary and preparation.
